I've read three or four books on the rather arcane subject of the White Rajahs. This one is the broadest and briefest at a mere pages, but it provides an excellent overview of the entire dynasty nonetheless/5. The Sultan of Brunei gave the title of Rajah and sovereignty of Sarawak, a province of Borneo, to James Brooke in Brooke established his reign over the area, and two further Brooke descendants ruled Sarawak as a British protectorate for the next hundred years, expanding Sarawak territory, successfully squashing piracy and putting in place a structured government and justice by: The history of the White Rajahs of Sarawak seems like a boy’s adventure book come to life.

Basically, an Englishman with his topsail schooner receives a kingdom to rule as a reward for helping the local king fight off pirates. Of course, history is more complicated than that, but that is roughly how James Brooke and his family came to found and rule the Kingdom of Sarawak from to InJames Brooke left England for Southeast Asia.
